In the world of first person shooters, victory can turn into defeat in seconds. Thus, we cannot afford poor PC performance; especially if you are into competitive gaming. Thus, many gamers nowadays are seriously investing on their computer systems to get the best gaming performance that they can get. This has made several gaming systems like Dell’s Alienware famous.

In my opinion, however, there is no need to have an overpowering PC setup to unleash your best gaming performance. Very few games will even use half of what PC’s such as Alienware can do. If you will be using famous FPS games such as Battlefield 3, then you really do not need anything more than a decent PC setup which we will be discussing.

CPU

A dual core CPU would be sufficient. However, if you really are after performance, a quad core CPU is great. However, there is no need to have the best CPU’s like the Intel i7 to have a great and lag free performance. An i3 or i5 would already be sufficient.

Operating System

Most people do not know the difference between a 32bit and 64bit OS. To give a simple definition, these specifications determine how your operating system interacts with your CPU. If you have an i3 or an i5, it is ideal to use the 32bit OS as it lets the CPU and the RAM handle more data at a given time, which means faster gaming performance.

GPU

Most gamers like having two GPU’s in one PC. However, this can cause power supply and crossfire issues. One powerful GPU is usually enough. Personally, I would go for DirectX11 compatible GPU with a 1024 MB RAM or higher. I suggest checking out GEFORCE GTX 580 or ATI Radeon 6000 Series.

Internet Connection

Because FPS games are usually online multiplayer games, I suggest not holding back with internet speed. Get the fastest possible internet connection. If you are is a 4G LTE coverage area, then try subscribing for it using your Android phone and use it as a modem. AT&T currently has one of the largest 4G network in the USA and chances are good that your area is covered. However, 4G connection can tend to be expensive. The safest choice is to go for a Verizon FiOS high speed internet with at least 15 Mbps speed.

Authors Note: For my next article, I will be discussing choosing the optimum phone for your lifestyle; when to choose an expensive smart phone in a 2 year subscription and when to use the cheap cell phones no contract solution.
